These photos are of a wild black stallion that I think might be Midnight’s brother. I named this horse, Midnight Star, because of the white star on his forehead. Like his sibling, Midnight Star looks like a black Friesian stallion with the same large muscular body, long mane and tail, and feathered fetlocks. The way he moves is like the high stepping Friesian horses.
I encountered Midnight Star by accident while looking for Midnight and his herd. Instead of finding just 19 horses, it was more like 35+ horses. Midnight Star has an impressive number of horses in his band. I began to notice on these Mustang photographic excursions in this particular area around Carson City, Nevada, I find a lot of black horses. Young and old. Some with markings, some with not. Black definitely seems like the dominant color for this region.
From my first meeting with this stallion, his personality trait seemed to be one of courage, compassion and bossiness. He would drop his head down low, put his ears back and his herd starts moving, rather quickly, to where he expects them to go. He’s been pretty hard on the young bachelors getting too close to his herd. I realized I needed to keep a close eye on this stallion as I wasn’t too sure of his temperament. During this encounter as I was photographing him and Midnight’s herds, I had a young spirited Appaloosa bachelor stallion hide right behind me. I mean, I turned around and maybe 40 feet away behind a small bush, directly behind me, stood this horse. I was smack dab between Midnight Star and this bachelor stallion. I didn’t want to be anywhere between these two stallions and quickly grabbed my tripod and scooted over to the side where I made sure a big tree was at my back. That way I knew I was out of harm’s way. When I moved the Appaloosa stallion skedaddled away from the herds. I guess he figured wasn’t going to protect him from Midnight Star charging.
Midnight Star is a majestic looking wild black Mustang stallion and I look forward to more photographic opportunities with this beautiful horse.
